How to Turn Your Photos into Soap

turn photos into soap

As you might have guessed I love taking photos. I’ve taken a lot in the bath and wanted to find a way of displaying them, so my brain started ticking over thinking ‘bath’ then ‘bubbles’ then ‘soap’! Of course! Put the photos in a bar of soap! So that’s exactly what I did.

For this craft you will need:

  • Melt and Pour soap base (I used this one)
  • Photos printed onto normal paper
  • Empty juice carton
  • Scissors, a teaspoon and a sharp knife
  • Essential oils (optional)

Cut the carton in half, and lose the top half. Measure the size of your carton. Cut your photos to fit snuggly into the base of your carton.

Following the instructions on your soap base, melt enough soap chunks in the microwave to make one bar of soap. I did mine in bursts of 10 seconds for 40 seconds, checking each time to see if it had melted.

If you’re using them, add your essential oils to the melted soap. Pour the entire mixture into the carton. Using a spoon, carefully push your photo into the centre of the melted soap.

Pop the mixture in the freezer for a few hours to set. Once it has set you can then repeat the process with another soap on top. The soap base I used was enough to make four soaps. Once all four are set, remove from the freezer and peel the carton off.

Using a sharp knife, prise the soaps apart. They may be a little rough around the edges but you can smooth them out with your fingers.

This idea came from craft gurus Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess. Their book, A Beautiful Mess Photo Idea, gives 95 inspiring tips for lifestyle photographers.

They steer away from the technicalities of using your camera, to give you new ways to photograph your life – from photographing family, things and pets to taking a professional looking selfie. They also have tutorials to make backdrops and props to achieve these shots. Then, once you have your shiny new snaps, Elsie and Emma give you creative ideas on how to display them (like this one!).

This book is perfect for those who need a little bit of inspiration in taking different photos and presenting them creatively, which is why it has the thumbs up from us.
