I was thinking I need to do more baking with Amelie. She’s old enough now, and we don’t do enough of it. Partly because I never know what to make, or I don’t have the ingredients, or the time…. guilt, guilt. But this one is easy, simple ingredients, simple decorating. We made some salt dough magic wands a few weeks ago and they worked so well that I thought I’d try a biscuit version. And – news flash – you can stick a wooden skewer into any biscuit and it makes it extra amazing for kids. Just don’t let them run around with it!
These aren’t the most beautiful of wand biscuits – they are child mixed and child decorated and probably have bogies and stuff in them so I wouldn’t offer them around. But its all about the process isn’t it!
For the biscuits:
- 175g plain flour
- 100g chilled butter, cubed
- 85g icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 egg yolk
- 12 wooden skewers
- star cookie cutter
For the icing:
- 400g/14oz icing sugar
- 3-4 tbsp water
- 2-3 drops of 3 different food colourings
- gold sugar balls, butterflies etc.
Preheat your oven to 180c then make your biscuit dough – I used this recipe from BBC Good Food. Make sure you refrigerate the dough, or it will be really tricky to roll and cut. Whilst the dough is setting, soak your skewers in a bowl of water. roll the dough out to about 1cm thickness.
Cut star shapes with the dough, then insert a skewer into each one to resemble a magic wand (we only did a few because we weren’t sure the stick would work!). Place on a baking sheet, on some baking parchment and bake for about 15 minutes, until golden.
Whilst they’re turning yummy, mix up the icing. Place the sugar in a bowl and mix with a spoonful of water at a time, until it is a runny but spreadable consistency. Separate into three bowls and add a little food colouring to each.
Once your biscuits are baked and thoroughly cooled you just need to add a teaspoon to each bowl, pour some toppings into small bowls and let the kids do the rest.
Its painful to watch isn’t it!
I find I really just want to step in and make the biscuits look neat and stop Amelie from adding 40 sugar butterflies to each one. but I didn’t and they look…well… Amelie loves them
