Play date and mum friends to me are like dating….with a toddler or two in tow. It’s a bit like trying to fit a square peg in a circular hole. I’ve been to numerous houses over the years where I’ve got on with the mum and got engrossed talking about Eastenders when the toddlers are pulling each other’s hair out and screaming “mine” or the other way around where the kids are delightfully
parallel playing (ignoring each other) and the conversation with the parent is as dry as their cake and amounts to “So…how many teeth does your child have now?”. I’m exaggerating slightly but you know what I mean.
Anyway, it’s not like that with our neighbours round the corner as we all get on. Play dates are always a bit crazy with Harper and Jasmine and their younger brothers but a nice level of crazy. We can’t walk past their house on the way to nursery without Harper screaming Jasmine “wake uppppppppppp” at 7.45am. The girls are jumping up and down shouting “best friends forever” one minute and the next arguing over who gets to hold Captain Barnacles the next minute.
We gatecrashed their street party recently which was an afternoon of live music, games and the girls’ first face painting session of the summer. Harper wanted to be a tiger and Jasmine a fairy leopard. which suits their personalities perfectly.
This week they are moving house to another part of Brighton and we’re sad that we won’t see them as much. I do feel sorry for the new people moving in as it’s going to be a few weeks before Harper realizes that Jasmine won’t be coming out of the house at 7.45am to say hi. You never know, we might make new friends with the new neighbours if we hang around their house long enough!!
