Mini Makers: Pom Pom Spider & friends

Continuing our total pom pom obsession (we’re loving our pom pom earrings, clutch bag and giant woolly door sign right now), how cute are these little pom pets? They’re so easy to make and kids will love winding the wool with their hands and giving them a little trim (and making a lot of woolly mess all over your carpet. You’re welcome). We made a little video tutorial for the spider and instructions for the rest are detailed below.

You will need:

  • wool in a variety of colours
  • felt
  • pva glue
  • googly eyes
  • pipe cleaners in a variety of colours
  • embroidery thread and needle (for the caterpillar)

How to Make a pom pom:

For a medium (about 1.5in) pom pom, wind the wool around four fingers 30-40 times. Peel away and tie with another bit of wool in the middle, as tightly as you can. Snip through all the loops and trim the wool to the size you want it. Bigger pom poms can be made by winding around your whole hand 50-60 times, smaller ones by winding less times around 3 fingers.

To make a stripey pom pom, all you need to do is wind the wool around your hands about 10 times in one colour, then swap to another colour, wind 10 times, and repeat. For a speckled pom pom, take  strands of different colours and wind them round together.

For the Caterpillar

make 3 green and 3 yellow medium pom poms, and 1 large yellow pom pom. Thread them together using a needle and some embroidery thread. When you get to the end, loop the thread back through to the front and tie the ends together. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the head for an antenna and glue goggly eyes onto the front.

For the Chick

Make 1 medium and 1 large yellow pom pom – when you trim the large one, keep the strands you used to tie the pom pom together uncut. Tie the 2 pom poms together with these strands. Cut little wings from yellow felt and glue these onto the sides. Glue a felt beak and googly eyes onto the front.

For a Cat

This cat* is made from a mix of two different colours to make him stripey. Make 1 medium and 1 large pom pom – when you trim the large one, keep the strands you used to tie the pom pom together uncut. Tie the 2 pom poms together with these strands. Wrap 2 pipe cleaners around his middle to make legs and glue on googly eyes and felt ears.

*to be honest this was meant to be a zebra. But it looks nothing like a zebra. So now its your common or garden black and white stripey cat…

For a Bee

Make 1 medium black pom pom and 1 large striped yellow and black pom pom. When you trim the large one, keep the strands you used to tie the pom pom together uncut and tie the 2 pom poms together with these strands. Bend two white pipe cleaners into heart shapes and fold the ends around the middle of the large pom pom. Add a black anntenna pipecleaner around his head. Finish by gluing on a pair of googly eyes.

For the Bunny & Polar bear

Make 1 medium and 1 large white pom pom – when you trim the large one, keep the strands you used to tie the pom pom together uncut. Tie the 2 pom poms together with these strands. Glue felt ears onto the top and a felt nose and googly eyes onto the front. You can add a tiny pre-made pom onto his bum if you like. Add little felt paws to the bottom.

If you want to hang your pom pom pets you can simply tie a long thread of wool around the middle. Peasy.
