As a final hooray before the reality of school kicks in, we went camping with Harper’s bestie and her family. Now I’m not a camper by nature. The only time I went as a kid was with the Girls Guides, when I got food poisoning and had to go home early. Not the best track record. Last year was the first time I’d been as an adult and with the kids. We went down to Devon very unprepared, without a coat, wellies or a hairbrush. So this year I was totally all over it and made sure I packed my winter coat and wellies.
We stayed at Cherry Tree campsite near the beach in Croyde and couldn’t recommended it more. We camped, beached, tried our hand at surfing, did a lot of scooting and ate smores.
As the beach was so close we spent a lot of time there. The weather wasn’t amazing but kids don’t seem to notice as there was sand to chuck around and rock pools to look in.
The girls spent a lot of time playing in the tent putting on kids make up. They ended up looking like tribal warriors instead of princesses as they had intended!
I’m putting this picture here to document the fact that I managed to sit down and read a whole TWO pages of a book uninterrupted. I’ve had the book out of the library for so long that my fine is now officially larger than the cost of the book.
Whilst it was all pretty relaxed for most of the time, Grayson proved to be the trickiest of the lot of them. He was constantly raiding the food part of the tent, finding any sharp kitchen utensils he could put his hands on and trying to touch the stove, all the time. It was full on and frustrating in equal measures.
Our friends are really into water sports so they brought their kit with them to teach Harper (and me) the basics.
Whilst I felt a little bit more prepared for camping this year we still didn’t bring a kettle, any racquets to play with or a tin opener so these have all gone on the packing list for next year. What essentials do you take with you? I’d love to know!
We took the long drive back, had piles and piles of smelly washing but made memories with friends and plans for camping again next year.
