Life In Pictures: Grayson’s 2nd Birthday

Grayson 2nd birthday - little button diaries

At the start of the year we had a little party for Grayson’s 2nd birthday. As the younger child, he’s spent the last couple of years being dragged to every class, playdate and social gathering that Harper’s been invited to, so it’s quite rare for him to be the centre of attention.

Mini Makers: Paper Plate Animals

paper-plate-animals-by-little-button-diaries

I made some paper plate animals with Amelie at the weekend. Normally, when I have a craft in mind for her, I set her up with all the stuff she needs, show her what to do, then use it as an excuse to go and do something else. This time I thought I’d not do that. I’m a bit of a distracted mum sometimes – I try not to be – but my mind wanders and before I know it I’ve agreed to a trip to the zoo at bedtime dressed as Alex the Lion.

Happy first week of January! This week has been a nice back-to-normal kinda week for us. I’ve been hanging out in the park and making crafty messes with my little one. I thought I’d feel really sad to take down the tree and say bye to Christmas, but it’s actually felt nice having our space again and getting back to routine. Our Christmas box is so rammed full that it no longer fits through the loft hatch – I need to stop buying decorations! So there’s a sad little festive mountain sitting on the landing where it will probably stay till March, going on previous experience.

Life in Pictures: Winter Wonderland Fun*

winter-wonderland-12

*Like, fun-ish.

On Saturday we decided to head up to Hyde Park and go to Winter Wonderland with the kids for a Christmas treat (using the word treat quite loosely here). Back in the day, before I had my little rotters, I used to go every year with my good friend Rach. We would drink copious amounts of mulled wine, giggle and stuff our faces with crepes. It was bliss. Now… it’s different. We did have a lovely time, and the kids enjoyed it. But MY GOD was it rammed. Winter Wonderland is now one huge crowd of people shuffling round trying to get to the nearest ride. I mean, it was clearly the busiest day to go and maybe we were slightly idiotic to choose the last Saturday before Christmas. But it was a bit chaotic. It’s also basically just a gigantuous fun fair, and not a lot more. So if you’re planning on going, erm, well maybe think about whether you love crowds a little before. That’s my advice!

Cath Kidston Christmas Tree Toppers

guard christmas tree topper diy

We may be slightly behind the rest of the world but this weekend we are putting our Christmas trees up. Hoorah!

A couple of weeks ago, Cath Kidston asked us to design two tree toppers inspired by their prints. We love all their London prints (like, to an excessive amount) so we decided to make a little guard to watch over all your gifts. Then we made a rosy posy topper, inspired by their Ardingly Rose print, for a blooming beautiful tree.

This Christmas feels like it might be the loveliest one yet.  Both my girls have a good enough understanding of what it’s about (like, ish) and it feels pretty magical. We’ve not done a lot in the way of decorations yet because our house is still being refurbished (boooo) but we did drive to a farm to get our Christmas tree this weekend. The farm was closed. Massive anti-climax, excited happy children quickly turned into wailing angry children. We f~ked up. But we plied them with snacks and headed to our little local Christmas fair which cheered them right up.

Life in Pictures: Wilderness Wood

wilderness-wood-12

I find it very hard to pull myself – and my kids – out into the cold at this time of year. It’s so easy to spend a day snuggled up with a duvet and hot chocolate and a whole heap of Disney. But we forced ourselves out this weekend to Wilderness Wood (near Uckfield) and I’m very happy we did because it turned into one of the loveliest days out. It’s such a beautiful place, full of fresh air, nature and wintry magic.

Make your Own Elf on the Shelf!

diy-elf-on-the-shelf-tutorial-by-little-button-diaries

Would you like to make your own, unique elf on the shelf? This one comes complete with little belled booties and a hat, a bag to store his goodies and a free template to make him super easy to make. Whoop!

It’s not too early to talk about christmas is it? Never! I was in the shops about a month ago  (a MONTH. Now that is too soon!) when I saw the little Elf on the Shelf thing. That thing has got it’s marketing pegged. £30 for a felt/plastic doll and a little book! I do like the idea of a cute little elf that sits happily on your shelf throughout December though, so I thought I would make my own, and share it with you. So you can too. I tried really hard with this one – I wanted him to be special. I hope you like him!

Mini Makers: Cardboard House

I was having a craft sort out the other day – I do this lots, with the aim of dramatically reducing all my craft crap. It doesn’t really work. I was chucking out some mount board (Why do I have mount board? I don’t need to mount anything! So to speak…) when I had an idea for a kids craft. A decorate-your-own-reusable-house-with-windows! Type thing. Not the catchiest of titles. But this is a super simple craft and one that kids can remake over and over again. You could also make it into an advent calendar for older children.

Pumpkin Decorating With Cath Kidston

skyline-pumpkin-final-2

We’ve teamed up with Cath Kidston to create some alternative ideas for Pumpkins for you for Halloween, inspired by their lovely prints. Our first one is this London skyline carved pumpkin, with a scene carved into the skin and stars made with a drill. Fun!

For the little ones, we’ve put away the tools and turned mini pumpkins into woodland animals without any carving in sight. For the full tutorials you can visit their blog!

Super Quick Bat Costume

easy-batgirl-batman-costume-by-little-button-diaries

KAPOW. This costume is super super easy. You can whip it up in 20 minutes flat and all you need is a bin liner, some felt, elastic and a couple of pipe cleaners. Our little ones were so enthralled with it that they flapped around the garden for a whole hour pretending to save the world. See our video tutorial for how to make it below. If you like it, please give us a little like on You Tube and share the love!
