Life in Pictures: Camber Sands

camber sands 4 bw

Camber Sands is one of the most beautiful beaches I know. The last time I was there, I was on a mini-break with George. I was heavily pregnant with Lilah, and we were trying to get in just one little trip away before we lost all our evenings and sanity once more. Then I went into labour. I thought I’d just eaten too much. But no, out she popped. Fun trip!

9 Ways to Get Creative With Cardboard

9 ways to get creative with cardboard

A few weeks ago, along with the super Oh Creative Day, we launched a new Instagram account @get.creative.with as a way to encourage families to get crafting together. Each week has a new theme and guest judge and this week it was our turn. We chose CARDBOARD as our theme, and oh my, we were not disappointed with the super ways people got creative with it.

Mini Makers: Clay Plant Pots

mini clay pots final 4

We ❤ air dry clay. But it’s only recently that our kids are starting to enjoy the stuff too (previous attempts haven’t always ended well with our kids either eating the clay or mushing it into their hair). Once you’re out of the toddler zone air dry clay is a fantastic medium for them to play around with – easy to mould, inexpensive, paintable and felt tip pen-able! Hobbycraft asked us to come up with an easy craft for kids using clay, so we decided to make these teeny plant pots, which are ridiculously easy to make with the help of a loo roll tube!

half term 1

Hello hello! Hope you’ve had a nice week? For us, it was half term and it’s been very lovely. I think I’m in a minority in the parent world, but I really love half term. Not in a slushy way, more that we like not being ruled by the routine! School is still new to us, and we (I) have struggled a bit with getting up and getting out in the mornings. In fact, I’m crap at it.  Despite my best intentions for calm TV-free mornings of getting ready without any tantrums and laughing into our cheerios, we always end up late,  missing socks, forgetting book bags and running to school with a sweat on. So this week has been about lie-ins. Not lie-ins like they used to be mind, more “you can take the ipad to your bedroom as a special treat!” kind of lie-ins. Which are almost as good. Almost.

Easy Peasy PJs

pyjamas little button diaries 12

I’m not a pro at sewing clothes. I made a dress once and forgot to put arm holes in it. Then I made a skirt – using ridiculously expensive liberty fabric – and it wouldn’t zip up. I made it twice, both times it would not zip up! It stayed in a “maybe it will fit one day” pile for about 4 years, then I cut it up. Depressing. So I haven’t really made many clothes since. But then I saw this fabric and I thought it would make some cute PJs… so I made some PJs! And, thank goodness, they were the easiest thing ever. You don’t need a pattern – you just need another pair of pyjamas to use as a template.

Life in Pictures: Stuck

wood 2

I don’t mean to whine (although I’m told I’m good at it), but this week has been a bit of a turd. It can go away now. New week please. It started off nicely, with a princess party and a little happy-muddy walk in the woods. I only have this one photo because I managed to donk my camera and it stopped working (caused a mild panic attack, but it started up again. It was just pissed off that I donked it).

Hedgehog Pillow

hedgehog pillow cushion tutorial little button diaires

My lovely friend Jess had a baby a little while back, so I thought I’d make him a little something. Seen as her little lovely’s middle name is spike… a hedgehog seemed the obvious answer! Look how totally adorable he is, makes my heart go a bit wobbly.

You will need:

  • 1/4m teal cotton canvas
  • 1/4m orange cotton canvas
  • brown embroidery thread
  • toy stuffing
  • template

1. Cut the templates out from the pdf attached. Cut 2 body pieces from the teal canvas. From the orange cut  2 head pieces and 4 ear pieces.

Snap Happy Kids

Not a day has gone by since we started this blog in 2013 when we haven’t taken a photo of something. Good or bad, our ‘big’ cameras are much like third children to us. They can be a pain and are a bit annoying to lug around but they bring us a lot of joy. It seems this love of photography has rubbed off on our Little Buttons.

Life In Pictures: Grayson’s 2nd Birthday

Grayson 2nd birthday - little button diaries

At the start of the year we had a little party for Grayson’s 2nd birthday. As the younger child, he’s spent the last couple of years being dragged to every class, playdate and social gathering that Harper’s been invited to, so it’s quite rare for him to be the centre of attention.

Mini Makers: Paper Plate Animals

paper-plate-animals-by-little-button-diaries

I made some paper plate animals with Amelie at the weekend. Normally, when I have a craft in mind for her, I set her up with all the stuff she needs, show her what to do, then use it as an excuse to go and do something else. This time I thought I’d not do that. I’m a bit of a distracted mum sometimes – I try not to be – but my mind wanders and before I know it I’ve agreed to a trip to the zoo at bedtime dressed as Alex the Lion.

Happy first week of January! This week has been a nice back-to-normal kinda week for us. I’ve been hanging out in the park and making crafty messes with my little one. I thought I’d feel really sad to take down the tree and say bye to Christmas, but it’s actually felt nice having our space again and getting back to routine. Our Christmas box is so rammed full that it no longer fits through the loft hatch – I need to stop buying decorations! So there’s a sad little festive mountain sitting on the landing where it will probably stay till March, going on previous experience.

Life in Pictures: Winter Wonderland Fun*

winter-wonderland-12

*Like, fun-ish.

On Saturday we decided to head up to Hyde Park and go to Winter Wonderland with the kids for a Christmas treat (using the word treat quite loosely here). Back in the day, before I had my little rotters, I used to go every year with my good friend Rach. We would drink copious amounts of mulled wine, giggle and stuff our faces with crepes. It was bliss. Now… it’s different. We did have a lovely time, and the kids enjoyed it. But MY GOD was it rammed. Winter Wonderland is now one huge crowd of people shuffling round trying to get to the nearest ride. I mean, it was clearly the busiest day to go and maybe we were slightly idiotic to choose the last Saturday before Christmas. But it was a bit chaotic. It’s also basically just a gigantuous fun fair, and not a lot more. So if you’re planning on going, erm, well maybe think about whether you love crowds a little before. That’s my advice!

Cath Kidston Christmas Tree Toppers

guard christmas tree topper diy

We may be slightly behind the rest of the world but this weekend we are putting our Christmas trees up. Hoorah!

A couple of weeks ago, Cath Kidston asked us to design two tree toppers inspired by their prints. We love all their London prints (like, to an excessive amount) so we decided to make a little guard to watch over all your gifts. Then we made a rosy posy topper, inspired by their Ardingly Rose print, for a blooming beautiful tree.

This Christmas feels like it might be the loveliest one yet.  Both my girls have a good enough understanding of what it’s about (like, ish) and it feels pretty magical. We’ve not done a lot in the way of decorations yet because our house is still being refurbished (boooo) but we did drive to a farm to get our Christmas tree this weekend. The farm was closed. Massive anti-climax, excited happy children quickly turned into wailing angry children. We f~ked up. But we plied them with snacks and headed to our little local Christmas fair which cheered them right up.
