Mini Makers: Paper Cup Mermaid

mermaid_final-a-682x1024

We love a good craft challenge. So when Hobbycraft sent us this giant box of craft goodies for kids and asked us to come up with something we emptied the contents onto the table, made a cup of tea and stared at it for a while waiting for inspiration to hit.

We’ve been crafting together for many years now so our tastes seem to have a merged into one! Once we began pulling out bits of craft materials they all seemed to fit together into this rather glam mermaid.

Mini Makers: Shaving Foam Marbling

IMG_3221

Oh. My. Days. We recently discovered the easiest and most addictive way to marble. Shaving foam and food colouring and BAM you’ve got yourself a full marbling kit. For free! We love it and kids love it because it involves mess!  And we even made a little vid to show you how:

You SEE?! Once you start marbling you won’t be able to stop!

Life In Pictures: Out of This World

space photoshoot - little button diaries

So a few weeks ago we had a day long photoshoot for our upcoming book, The Space Craft Book. We’ve done six of these all days shoots so the kids are seasoned professionals now. Well, that is everyone but Grayson who was on a one-man mission to destroy everything in his path. No craft project was safe!

Mini Makers: Easy Fairy Wings

fairy wings 5

These fairy wings are so easy! We LOVE a bit of sticky back plastic (AKA contact paper. Whatever TF that means). We use it a lot with our kids, along with double sided tape, because it allows kids to create a messy make without any glue or sticky yukky bits going all over everywhere. Mess-free-mess is our favourite kind of mess. You can make all sorts – suncatchers (and here) are a favourite of ours but as an alternative we made some fairy wings that you can actually wear. Mine wore hers all day, then had a massive meltdown in the evening because I wouldn’t let her wear them to bed. SO angelic.

Mini Makers: Natural Paintbrushes

nature paintbrush 5

We got a whiff of sunshine and warmer weather yesterday after a totally grey May so far, so after dinner we did a little outdoor crafting in the sun. Harper is a hoarder of leaves, stones, flowers – basically anything she can stuff in her pockets/bag when we’re out. So after going through all her coat pockets we had a nice collection of natural bits and bobs. We threw in some paint and experimented using natural finds as ‘paintbrushes’.

Mini Makers: Clay Plant Pots

mini clay pots final 4

We ❤ air dry clay. But it’s only recently that our kids are starting to enjoy the stuff too (previous attempts haven’t always ended well with our kids either eating the clay or mushing it into their hair). Once you’re out of the toddler zone air dry clay is a fantastic medium for them to play around with – easy to mould, inexpensive, paintable and felt tip pen-able! Hobbycraft asked us to come up with an easy craft for kids using clay, so we decided to make these teeny plant pots, which are ridiculously easy to make with the help of a loo roll tube!

We’re fairly new to making videos but have been trying to channel our inner Blue Peter presenters to improve. If there’s anything you’d like to see us make or talk about then we’d love to know. Otherwise we’ll end up waffling about Custard Creams, Take That and Made In Chelsea!

Mini Makers: Glitter Thank You Cards

glitter thank you cards

We’re still at the stage with Harper where we have to remind her to say “please” and “thank you” from time to time. So after receiving a lovely bunch of Christmas gifts, we wanted to make sure we got our thank you cards out without delay. Because Harper loves glitter, and because she had enjoyed making some glittery Christmas tree decorations, we decided to have one more go using the sparkly stuff for this really simple craft project.

Life In Pictures: A Busy Week

little button diaries

This week has been so busy! Usually our worky things get spread out a little bit but this week, er, nope. All whacked together in one jam-packed half term week. It’s been fun, hectic and tiring in equal measures.

We began the week doing a day of baking for our next craft book… the theme of which we won’t say but there might be a little clue in the pics if you’re clever enough to work it out :-). Luckily we only had Grayson around to help us out who spent the whole day trying to climb on the table (where the cake was) and say “ARRGH”. He wasn’t much of a help decorating biscuits.

Continuing our total pom pom obsession (we’re loving our pom pom earrings, clutch bag and giant woolly door sign right now), how cute are these little pom pets? They’re so easy to make and kids will love winding the wool with their hands and giving them a little trim (and making a lot of woolly mess all over your carpet. You’re welcome). We made a little video tutorial for the spider and instructions for the rest are detailed below.
