Nap Time Crafts: Leather Feathers

leather feather keyring little button diaries 10

If you have any scraps of leather lying around this is a really simple and quick DIY to make a lovely set of feather keyrings. Just find yourself a simple feather silhouette image online and widen the stem so that it’s big enough for your eyelet.

You will need:

  • scraps of gold & brown leather (about 15cm x 5cm)
  • 1cm gold eyelets
  • leather punch, or regular hole punch
  • hammer
  • masking tape
  • keyrings

1. Begin by drawing out a couple of feathers on paper. You can use the template I made for mine. Make sure that the stem of the feather (stem? stick? you know what I mean!) is wider than your eyelet. Cut the template out roughly, then cut the leather so that it is just a little bigger than the feather.

In doing so, I discovered that the reverse of the hideous black was this really lovely soft blue suede. so I stuffed it in a black sack and stored it. For three years. Waiting for inspiration. And then in a moment of chuck-it-or-use it I decided I should turn the leather into a bag.

At the end of last year we moved into a new house. This was a big deal for my little family as we had been living in a basement flat that we’d outgrown. To mark the occasion I wanted to make a sparkly new keyring for my new set of house keys (and how I love saying house keys, not flat keys!).
