Making a personalised Father’s Day tablet case is a wonderful way to show you care. Father’s Day is just around the corner, and I’m already feeling the pressure. My husband always says he doesn’t want a fuss, but then on the day, he acts like a king waiting for his tributes. It’s quite funny, actually. He works incredibly hard, so I suppose he deserves a little special treatment. Just a little. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, last-minute gift idea, I’ve got the perfect project. We recently made this tablet case, and it’s simple enough for children to help with, making it a genuinely special present from them.
A Gift from the Heart (and Old Jeans)
This project uses old jeans or any spare denim you have lying around. It gives an old pair of trousers a new life. The best part is the personal touch. Kids can write a message directly onto the fabric, which you can then embroider. We even added a custom button made from shrink plastic. It’s a great activity for a quiet afternoon.
What You’ll Need
Here is a list of supplies for your crafting session:
- 54 x 22 cm piece of non-stretch denim
- 54 x 22 cm piece of orange lining fabric
- 54 x 22 cm piece of thick fusible interfacing
- Chalk fabric pencil
- Orange embroidery thread and a needle
- Embroidery hoop (this is optional, but very helpful)
- 12 cm of leather cord
- A sewing machine
- Shrink plastic sheets
- Colouring pencils
- A hole punch
Getting Started: Personalising the Denim
This is where the kids can really shine.
- Start by folding the denim fabric in half, with the shorter ends meeting. Press it firmly.
- Ask your little one to write a message on the bottom section, just above the fold. They can use the chalk pencil for this. Simple things like ‘For Daddy’ or ‘Love from Leo’ work great. Anything they write can be easily stitched over.
Adding the Embroidery
If your child is old enough, they can try this part. Otherwise, it’s a quick job for an adult.
- Use the chalk markings as a guide.
- Backstitch the text onto the denim using the orange embroidery thread.
- An embroidery hoop will keep the fabric taut and make stitching much easier.
This is an important step for making a truly personalised Father’s Day tablet case.
Assembling the Case
Now it’s time to put the main pieces together.
- Find the center point on one of the open ends of the denim. This should be on the right side of the fabric, opposite the embroidered message.
- Take your leather cord, create a loop, and pin it at the marked center point. The loop should face inward, toward the middle of the fabric.
- Sew along the edge of the fabric to secure the cord in place. This will be the closure for the case.
- Place the denim and lining fabric with their right sides facing each other. Pin them together.
- Sew the two short ends of the fabric together, using a 1 cm seam allowance. You will create a large loop of fabric. Press the seams open.
Putting It All Together
We’re almost there! This next part brings the case to life.
- Keep the fabric loop inside out. Open it and lay it flat. One side should be denim, the other should be the lining.
- Pin the long sides together. Make sure the seams you sewed earlier line up perfectly.
- Sew the sides with a 1 cm seam allowance. Leave a 10 cm gap along one edge of the lining fabric. This opening is for turning the case right side out.
- Carefully turn the case the right way out through the gap.
- Take the lining fabric and fold the raw edges of the 10 cm gap inward. Press it, pin it, and then use a slip stitch to close the opening.
- Push the lining inside the denim part of the case. Press the entire thing flat for a crisp finish.
Creating a Custom Button
This little detail adds so much character.
- Cut a 6 cm circle from a sheet of shrink plastic.
- Let your child colour it in with colouring pencils. Markers tend to smudge, so pencils are a better choice.
- Punch two holes in the center of the circle.
- Bake the plastic circle according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Watch as it shrinks down to a perfect button size! It’s a bit like magic.
The Final Touch
The last step is attaching your unique button.
- Mark the spot on the front of the case where the leather loop folds over and touches.
- Sew your newly made button securely in place at that spot.
And there you have it! A beautiful, handmade personalised Father’s Day tablet case. Pop Dad’s tablet inside and find a good hiding spot until the big day. He will be so touched by the effort and the sweet, personal details. It’s a gift that is both useful and full of love. This project is more than just a present; it’s a memory you create with your kids. I think it’s a great alternative to buying another gadget. A handmade item always feels more special. This is one personalised Father’s Day tablet case he’ll keep for years.
